The Irish national men's football team is the representative football team of Ireland. The Football Association of Ireland was founded in 1921, but the national team did not make it to the European Championship finals for the first time until 1964. In the 1988 European Championship, Ireland defeated England 1-0 in the group stage, drew 1-1 with the Soviet Union, and lost 0-1 to the Netherlands, failing to advance to the semi-finals. In both the 2012 and 2016 European Championships, the Irish team was eliminated in the group stage. In the round of 16 of the 2016 European Championship, the Irish team lost 0-2 to the host country France and was eliminated.
